Growing pains prove too hard
We had a plan and we stuck to it. Even when it
didn't work.
The VP Juniors have grown bigger and stronger than
last year - when they narrowly beat us, assisted, some would say,
thanks to some confusion over the scoring (see details of that game
here...).
No such assistance was needed this time round.
Captain Tim Castle won the toss and put the Old Fallopians in to
bat.
Simon Hemelryk and Nick Clarke opened and took the
sting out of the early bowling, as planned, scoring 19 each. At this
point debutant Justin Roy and Ed Paleit were primed to come in all
guns blazing and take the game beyond the reach of the Juniors.
Only Roy departed after 8 runs, Paliet fell next for
a duck and Jim Ward, on his first appearance, was dismissed the
following over.
At this stage star all-rounder Freddie Barrass was
due to enter the stage and rescue the game ... only he'd forgotten
he was playing (the less said the better) ... so it was left for
Castle to eke out 15 in the last three overs to restore some
respectability to the innings.
John Shaw fell for another duck, but special mention
should be given to Steve Bond, casually minding his own business on
the boundary, who stepped into F Barrass's shoes and helped Castle
survive the final overs.
A total of 89 was never going to be enough and the
Juniors comfortably knocked off the target with four overs to spare
and no wickets lost.
