Just one more wicket to fame
The Old Fallopians nearly pulled off a famous victory against Sky
with one of their greatest performances ever.
In dry but near gale-force conditions new recruits Richard Milne
(34) and Steve Cahill (42) set the pace against a keen Sky bowling
attack.
When they eventually fell, Cahill LBW and Milne bowled, skipper
Jonathan Stebbins (18) and Justin Roy (8) took the total after 16
overs to what eventually proved to be an unlucky 111.
We then awaited the usual Sky onslaught (they have won the league
and cup more times than any other side).
But instead they fell one by one, to spectacular catches from
Stebbins and Freddie Barrass, with Cahill (at keeper) catching two
more and stumping one, and Roy catching another off Paul Hosking's
bowling.
Only one more wicket stood between the Fallopians and victory... and
had this been a longer duration match we would have had a much
bigger total to defend and would certainly have won.
But Sky's last man stand failed to crack and somehow gained the
30-odd runs remaining to avoid an unprecedented defeat.
Sky celebrated their last-minute escape, as the Fallopians were left
to rue on what might have been...
(Postscript: when the scores were added up for this page, it
turns out the Old Fallopians had in fact scored 120... Moral: CHECK
THE SCORES [I've reduced the extras to make the scorecard fit the
match])
