| July 11, 2004 | Friendly vs London Fields | Won by 8 wickets | |
Scratch team wins the dayPlayed at London Fields By David Sultanti Our best performance to date made sweet by the fact we had but a crowd, three, last Thursday. However, thanks to Greg Clifford's "Phone an Australian Friend" option and the captain of the Shakespeare CC and two of his colleagues, a full team was fielded. I had been warned by Chats Palace of London Fields' depth in strength, especially in batting. Additionally and before the game, London Fields said they had researched us on the interweb and while they almost died laughing, were impressed with the site's design and wanted the number of our IT technician, anyone know who that is? London Fields appeared a mostly lean, keen and well organised team and were able to out-drink us beforehand, notwithstanding the stoic opposition offered by the Shakespeare CC chaps. The toss was lost and they batted first, my preference on this occasion. For them, all went to plan until our second delivery resulted in Greg making a spectacular juggling catch at short leg; and that set the tone. Good fielding and two further excellent catches by Freddie and Jim and accurate bowling, Mark getting four wickets (and whoever captains then next time he plays, please note, he's on a hattrick ball), enabled us to bowl them out for under 100. It is often easier to describe sickness than health but in this game great teamwork and fine individual contributions underpinned our performance. New man Darren Tempany scored a six from his first delivery, as predicted by Greg. And finally, even though there was no clubhouse, a delicious tea was supplied by last week's team doctor, Dr Thirlwell.
