Academics fail to
make mark
Played at Hampstead Heath
By Rafe Smallman (captain)
It appears we have a team of highly capable bowlers! When even the
wicketkeeper is taking wickets you know something is up. But more of
that later.
The day saw the Old Fallopians take on the unknown quality of
Bikbeck University. OF put Birkbeck into bat and for the first three
overs it looked as if we were in for a long afternoon. However,
tight bowling ensued and wickets started to tumble, leaving Birkbeck
3 short of a century.
It was a great all round display from bowlers and fielders, with
special mention going to Matt Woods, taking 3 (?) wickets, including
that of their star batsman, as well as a wicket with his debut,
shane warne style, ball!
This prompted an early tea and much scurrying from the tea lady, but
it was worth the wait!
All it needed was for the OFs to knock of the runs. Tight opening
bowling ensured a slow start, a couple of wickets got the nerves
jangling, however the result was never really in doubt.
A few big blows from AK and a nice closing partnership from the
two Peters saw us to the finish with 6 wickets in hand and time to
spare for a beer (? where was it?) match.
In this game, all ten players bowled, and I don't remember a bad
ball from the Fallopians. Remarkable, a lot of untapped resources!
OFs kept Birkbeck down to 50 runs off 10 overs, a target that seemed
well within their reach.
Birkbeck also showed a capability to bowl well, and it was
starting to look close until the partnership between Simon and John
set up the finish with 5 balls to spare.
