Played at Victoria Park, pitch 2 Report by Hassan Khan (captain)
This was an important toss to win for yours truly on a truncated
summer evening against a team with eight wins from 11. The decision
paid rich dividends as Old Fallopians II openers Turner and Wright
put the Royal Strikers attack to the sword. Running like hares
between the wickets, they perfectly blended Wright's aggressive
strokeplay with Turner's deft touch.
In just under ten overs
they compiled a masterly 104, ended only when Turner retired on 50*.
Wright, having selflessly supported his partner, duly brought up his
own half century to give us an unassailable platform. For once, our
innings continued its momentum, with important cameos from Dubey,
Wake and the skipper taking OFII to easily our highest score of the
season.
Chasing an imposing 166 from 16 overs, the RS batsmen
counterattacked valiantly but buckled under insurmountable
scoreboard pressure. OF legend Tim Castle [!] drew first blood, thanks
to a nonchalant catch at 'cow corner ' from Wake. Henceforth, their
innings was slowly choked off by our excellent array of spinners.
McGee and Dubey were good but our secret weapon was the bamboozling
wrist-spin of Mahboob. This terrific trio were so effective that
yours truly had the gentle task of defending a lead of 33 runs in
the last over, so see the opposition concede the match on 137-4.
A
thumping win for OFII against quality opposition but, most
importantly, all eight Fallopians contributed with batting, bowling
and, unusually for us, sharp fielding which was backed up by
impeccable wicketkeeping from Turner.
[P.S. - there were an
unusually high number of wides awarded in this match - from both
sides! See details below - TC]
