Played at Victoria Park. Report by Hassan Khan (captain)
This fixture, dubious after torrential rain, was Will Ellis'
swansong. By extraordinary coincidence, Will discovered that Charlie
Miller was one of his Oxford contemporaries. In fact, I've never had
the privilege to captain such a learned team, with 3 Oxford
graduates, a Latin teacher and even our 'kit man' possessing a
politics degree!
It was an important toss to lose, Broadway
Market electing to bat and benefitting from better light. Their
innings was unspectacular but superb running between the wickets
ensured a highly competitive 153-3 from 16 overs. Our bowling attack
lacked variety and Tim's decision to bowl slow did work. The rain -
soaked matting made running up difficult but one 46 year old (HK)
was lucky enough to take 3-30, including 2 wickets in 2 balls!
Chasing 154 in tough conditions, the ball and outfield equally
soggy, our batsmen made a valiant attempt in fading light. Rav
Matharu scored yet another silky 50, punctuated with Greenidgesque
square cuts and Azharuddin-like on - drives. He was ably supported
by arguably the find of the season, Charlie Miller, who scored a
gritty 50 despite ankle problems. Unfortunately, these two had to
retire at inopportune moments during our run chase and, with
boundaries practically impossible, my 19 not out was never enough.
In summary, we fell agonisingly 8 runs short in a highly
competitive match. Best wishes to Will and family for a new life in
Berlin.
