Played at Victoria Park. Report by Hassan Khan (captain)
This was our last midweek league game of 2017 and it immediately
took an unexpected twist. Andy Huckle, Tim's designated choice of
captain, decided to abdicate. In a scene reminiscent of Aussie Kim
Hughes' tearful resignation against an all-powerful West Indies (how
times change), I tried in vain to change Andy's mind. Eventually, I
agreed to 'do an Allan Border' and take over.
Now to the
cricket: my strategy was simple but realistic. Technosys, League and
Cup champions of 2016, were heavy favourites. So my priority was to
win the toss, bat and score over 100. This would, I understood,
eliminate Technosys' chance of winning the League. Also, I didn't
want us being hammered for 190-odd in 16 overs.
O.F. master
batsman Rav Matharu was in his element, hitting a silky 43, but the
surprise package was Andy. He deftly negotiated the bowling to
ensure Rav had most of the strike. However, when the latter
departed, Andy took the responsibility of getting us to a
respectable total. Against arguably the strongest bowling attack in
the Victoria Park League, Andy struck a brave and classy 29.
Technosys were brutal in their run chase: 107 from just 7
overs. O.F. can hold their heads up with pride against some tough
teams in our first season of Division One cricket. Well done
everyone.
