Better, just not good enough
A sparkling debut by postgraduate student Richard
Milne was the highlight of this close-fought contest.
Lightening fast sprinting between the wickets, firm
clouts towards the boundary and a very broad-rimmed hat helped him
carry his bat over the duration of the shortened 14 over innings and
a maiden score of 31 not out.
Aggressive batting by captain Jonathan Stebbins,
assisted by cameos from Fawad Omer and Greg Clifford took the
Fallopians total to 105 for two.
This was a long way from last year's abject
performance against the same side when we were dismissed for just 21
(see grim details
here...).
But Pacific had batting aplenty and knocked off the
total in the fading light with two overs to spare, despite sharp
bowling from Omer (4-0-2-23) and Ed Paleit (3-0-25-1), and keen
keeping by debutant Duncan Millar.
Historical note: This was the first Old Fallopians
league game, and perhaps the first Victoria Park league game, to be
played on two pitches. The first two overs were played on the far
pitch 3 but with only one set of the required spring stumps (the
others being in Peter Frisby's loft). The remainder of the game was
played on pitch two, which can take the ordinary stumps which
Pacific had brought.
